Spain Elopement Guide & Packages | Written by a Photographer, Not an Algorithm

A couple holds hands after their cliff-side ceremony during their elopement in Mallorca, Spain.

If you've spent five minutes Googling "how to elope in Spain" you've probably read the same AI-generated list, rolled your eyes, and started the search all over again.. Maybe? Yes?

Hi, I'm Michelle. I'm a photographer who has actually photographed elopements in Spain, scouted locations on the ground, and is in the process of relocating there to bring my expert elopement knowledge and serve couples full time. This is the guide I wish existed when I was planning my first Spain elopement.

How to get a marriage license in Spain

Can Foreigners Elope in Spain?

Unfortunately, foreigners canโ€™t legally elope in Spain unless one partner has been a legal resident in Spain for at least 2 years. However, this does not mean your elopement is ruined. In fact, most couples who elope in Spain have a civil ceremony in their home country then a symbolic one in Spain.

A common scenario:

  • File the paperwork in your home town and do an informal (or not!) courthouse thing to make it legal.

  • Travel to Spain for your elopement and hire an officiant to perform a symbolic ceremony. Or self-solemnize. Honestly, you can do whatever you want and weโ€™re to help you every step of the way.

Witnesses and Officiants for Spain Elopements

One key aspect to keep in mind is that for a legal marriage in Spain, you will need at least two witnesses present during the ceremony. These witnesses must be over 18 and have valid identification, such as a passport. Additionally, an officiant, typically a civil or religious figure, is required to perform the ceremony. Many couples choose to legally marry in their home country and have a symbolic ceremony in Spain, allowing them to elope more freely in beautiful locations without worrying about local regulations. Whether you opt for a legal or symbolic ceremony, Spain's stunning landscapes provide a breathtaking backdrop for your intimate celebration.

I do have a recommendation on an officiant in Mallorca. He is incredible and Iโ€™d love to refer him to any couple who works with us for their Spain elopement.

Best Places to Elope in Spain (From Someone Who's Actually Been)

Spain is home to 16 national parks, numerous lakes, and landscapes like the desert, mountains, and forest, making this area extremely diverse. Below are just a few of the many different types of scenery you can experience on your elopement day.

Picos de Europa National Park

Picos de Europa in Northern Spain

Located in Northern Spain, Picos de Europa National Park is a well-known national park composed of forested mountain ranges filled with lakes, wildlife, and numerous hiking trails. This is one of the more popular national parks, so be prepared for visitors. But donโ€™t be afraid of tourists, we know the best time of year, week, and day to elope at heavily trafficked areas, so we can minimize the foot traffic around your elopement memories. If epic hiking and views that are out of this world, Northern Spain may be the best place to elope for you.

Bardenas Reales

The desert landscape in Northern Spain - Bardenas Reales.

Also in Northern Spain, Bardenas Reales is a desert-like region filled with canyons, colors, and epic structures. Itโ€™s definitely giving Utah or Western US vibes. This is perfect for couples looking at having a desert elopement but in Europe. While most folks think of coast lines and the salty sea when they think of Spain, getting hitched in the desert instead would make for a wildly unique wedding day.

If eloping in Bardenas Reales is up your alley, there are plenty of incredible experiences to add to your trip. Besides the obvious hiking or mountain biking in the terrain, plan to visit the nearby medieval town of Olite, famous for its grand castle and charming old streets, or make a stop at Tudela, known for its historic architecture and delicious local cuisine. If youโ€™re a wine lover (Iโ€™m a #pinotgrigiogirl), the region is close to some of Spain's best wineries in Navarra and La Rioja. Donโ€™t skimp on the lodging- plan to get your shut eye at the luxurious Aire de Bardenas, a boutique hotel offering stunning views of the desert and unforgettable stargazing under the vast open sky.

Lakes of Covadonga

Lakes of Covadonga are two glacial lakes in Northern Spain. Thereโ€™s a hiking trail that takes you around the lakes and to other beautiful lookout points around the area.

Barcelona

Barcelona is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in all of Spain. Whether you want to elope or simply enjoy the scenery here, Barcelona is for everyone. Plus, there are a variety of activities and amazing restaurants to enjoy on your elopement day.

Tossa De Mar

Tossa De Mar is a quaint coastal town near Barcelona. Known primarily for its old architecture, this slice of Spain has some incredible beaches to explore. This location is pretty busy during the summer months, so consider having a weekday elopement during the off-season, or during sunrise/sunset in the summer.

Mallorca: The Most Magical Elopement Location in Spain

We just photographed this Mallorca elopement back in September and SHEWWWW buddy let me tell you what. Had it not been for my hours and hours of online research, and hiring a travel consultant in Spain, Iโ€™m afraid this beautiful couple would have ended up in a super high trafficked area and that was NOT what they wanted. Luckily, I scoured the web and found the perfect location for a private elopement in Mallorca. The only folks in sight were two nude sunbathers, who promptly put their pants on when they saw us walk in.

I cannot begin to explain the magic of Mallorca. I have never experienced a place with the charm of Europe, the vibe of Spaniards, yet the mountains and sea are a stoneโ€™s throw apart. Honestly, Mallorca has it all.

If you want warm weather, luxe accommodations, and simply divine food, Mallorca is a dream destination for your elopement- just trust me ok?

Many couples opt for a symbolic ceremony on the island, leaving behind the stress of legal requirements and focusing purely on the joy of their elopement day. When I say unforgettable, I mean it. Having spent 8 days in Mallorca this year, I have all the recs on where to go, what to skip, and where to eat.

Malaga

If youโ€™re looking for a mix of sun, sea, and history for your elopement, head to Malaga on Spainโ€™s southern coast. A vibrant city, rich cultural heritage, stunning beaches, and scenic mountain views all rolled into one. Couple photos in the iconic Moorish Alcazaba fortress? Yes please! Plus vows on a golden beach with the Mediterranean as your backdrop? Check, check, and check.

As much as weโ€™ve traveled, I always recommend finding places to explore that are a bit more off the beaten path. In Malaga, check out the neighborhood of Pedregalejo, where you can walk along the seaside promenade lined with colorful chiringuitos (beach bars). Rent a bike and take a ride along the coast or enjoy a sunset picnic on the beach. Warm weather + delicious Andalusian cuisine + welcoming atmosphere = perfect destination for a laid-back elopement.

Hereโ€™s a perfect itinerary for a dreamy elopement in Mรกlaga, blending romance, adventure, and local culture:

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

  • Morning: Arrive in Mรกlaga and check into a cozy boutique hotel.

  • Afternoon: Stroll through the historic center. Visit the Catedral de Mรกlaga, often referred to as "La Manquita" (the one-armed lady). Donโ€™t forget to snap some photos in the lively Plaza de la Constituciรณn.

  • Evening: Enjoy a romantic dinner at a local restaurant like El Pimpi, where you can indulge in traditional Andalusian dishes while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Pro-tip: ALWAYS make reservations.

Day 2: Elopement Day

  • Morning: Start with a leisurely breakfast at a cafรฉ near the beach, enjoying fresh pastries and coffee.

  • Late Morning: Head to the Alcazaba of Mรกlaga, where you can explore the stunning Moorish fortress and take beautiful photos with panoramic views of the city.

  • Afternoon: Your elopement ceremony! Have your photographer (hi- hopefully thatโ€™s me!) help you choose a spot that will feel intimate. Consider hiring a local officiant to create a memorable and personalized ceremony.

  • Post-Ceremony: Celebrate with a bottle of local Mรกlaga wine or champagne on the beach, enjoying the sun and sea breeze together.

  • Evening: For a unique dining experience, try a seaside chiringuito (beach bar) where you can savor fresh seafood or tapas with the waves and waiter being the only guests at your reception (ok maybe the other diners and patrons too)

Day 3: Adventure and Relaxation

  • Morning: Take a scenic hike in the nearby Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. Enjoy breathtaking views and discover hidden gems along the way. Pack a picnic to enjoy at a scenic spot.

  • Afternoon: Return to Mรกlaga and unwind at the Playa de la Malagueta. Take a dip in the Mediterranean or relax on the sand while sipping refreshing drinks.

  • Evening: Experience the local nightlife by catching a flamenco show in La Malagueta or at a local venue in the city. Immerse yourselves in the passionate rhythms and culture of Andalusia.

Day 4: Culture and Departure

  • Morning: Before you leave, visit the Picasso Museum to admire the works of Mรกlagaโ€™s most famous son.

  • Afternoon: Explore the charming streets of Pedregalejo, where you can enjoy a final meal by the sea. Try a traditional espeto de sardinas (grilled sardines) at one of the beachfront restaurants.

  • Departure: Head back to your accommodation to collect your bags and say goodbye to Mรกlaga.

Granada

A view of Granada Spain and the mountains at sunset

Eloping in Granada will have you saying โ€œCan you imagine living here?!โ€ Get lost in the curvy streets of the Albaicรญn (but then pull up Google maps lol), sip wine while watching flamenco, or take in the view of the mountains at sunset. For my foodies out there, this is place to go (plus free tapas with every drink!)

After youโ€™ve had your fill of Granada, take an adventure day over to the Sacromonte Caves. Head to the hills just outside the city and check out this lesser-known area rich with culture and history. Sacromonte offers a unique glimpse into traditional Andalusian life. Whitewashed cave houses (many of which have been converted into quirky museums), artisan workshops, and intimate flamenco venues make it worth the day trip. And if youโ€™re up for a little hike, the viewpoint at the top of Sacromonte offers a stunning panorama of the Alhambra and the city, especially at sunset.

Seville

A view from a downtown historical site in Seville Spain

Eloping in Seville = Spanish dream. With plazas soaking in the sun, ornate architecture, and the smell of orange blossoms everywhere, the city feels tailor-made for love (sorry is that too cheesy?) Imagine exchanging your vows in the gardens of the Alcรกzar or beneath the soaring arches of the grand Plaza de Espaรฑa, but at sunrise because #tourists. After your ceremony, take a walk through the cobbled streets of the old town and sip sangria at a tapas bar (are you catching the theme of Spanish tapas?) while we wait for the sun to dip a little. Perhaps weโ€™ll stumble upon a flamenco performance, since Sevilla is the birthplace of this dance. If urban vibes are up your alley, the Moorish-Renaissance architecture of Seville is the perfect backdrop for a Spanish elopement.

Marbella

A street view of Marbella Spain

Eloping in Marbella? Oh, you're in for a treat! This place is an absolute dream for couples looking to tie the knot in style.

If you want a bit of charm, head to the old town, where youโ€™ll find cobblestone streets, bright buildings and colorful flowers. The Plaza de los Naranjos is just stunning, and itโ€™s the perfect spot for a romantic ceremony surrounded by the sweet smell of orange trees. After you say โ€œI do,โ€ why not celebrate at one of those fabulous beachfront restaurants? Fresh seafood, local wines, and an unforgettable sunset? Makes sense to me.

And if youโ€™re up for a little adventure, the Sierra Blanca mountains arenโ€™t far away. You can hike for breathtaking views or explore the quaint village of Ojรฉn, where youโ€™ll get a taste of authentic Andalusian life.

Honestly, Marbella has this perfect mix of luxury, natural beauty, and cultural vibes that makes it an ideal spot for an elopement adventure of a lifetime.

Best Time to Elope in Spain: Honest Advice

One of the great things about Spain is the weather.

In fact, the weather in Spain is so mild and mostly dry that anytime of year is a great time to elope.

However, the two best seasons to elope are:

  • spring

  • fall

Both of these months bring good weather, small crowds, and plenty of fun activities to do. In the winter months, the northern part of Spain will get snow while the southern part stays dry.

Pro tip: Avoid visiting Spain in the summer. Prices increase, there are huge crowds, and you need to plan months in advance when it comes to booking reservations for things.

What to know about spain before visiting

  1. The public transportation system in Spain is amazing! If youโ€™re eloping somewhere close to a big city, renting a car isnโ€™t necessary.

  2. Dinner is served late. People donโ€™t usually have dinner until 9-10pm, so plan accordingly, as some restaurants donโ€™t open until late at night.

  3. If you stay in large cities like Madrid or Barcelona, be aware of pickpocketers. It has become a real problem over the past few years. Always be sure to keep your belongings close.
