How to Plan a Spain Elopement: Everything You Need to Know {Updated for 2024!}

For those who are looking to throw out the wedding rule book and say f*ck it- keep reading.

If you know Spain, you love Spain. It’s hella laid back and insanely gorgeous- which makes it one of the best places to elope in the world.

Home to stone castles, snow-capped mountains, quiet countrysides, and modern cities, Spain is one of the most diverse and beautiful countries to elope. With a variety of activities, food, and more, this bustling country is perfect for couples looking to have an adventurous (or urban!) elopement.

This guide covers everything you need to know about how to plan your very own Spain elopement, from the top 6 places to elope to boutique lodging options, and course where to chow down. Because you know that we all go to Europe for the foooood.

Learn about how to elope in Spain with this thorough guide which covers:

How to get a marriage license in Spain

Can Foreigners Elope in Spain?

Unfortunately, foreigners can’t legally elope in Spain unless one partner has been a legal resident in Spain for at least 2 years. However, this does not mean your elopement is ruined. In fact, most couples who elope in Spain have a civil ceremony in their home country then a symbolic one in Spain.

A common scenario:

  • File the paperwork in your home town and do an informal (or not!) courthouse thing to make it legal.

  • Travel to Spain for your elopement and hire an officiant to perform a symbolic ceremony. Or self-solemnize.

Witnesses and Officiants for Spain Elopements

One key aspect to keep in mind is that for a legal marriage in Spain, you will need at least two witnesses present during the ceremony. These witnesses must be over 18 and have valid identification, such as a passport. Additionally, an officiant, typically a civil or religious figure, is required to perform the ceremony. Many couples choose to legally marry in their home country and have a symbolic ceremony in Spain, allowing them to elope more freely in beautiful locations without worrying about local regulations. Whether you opt for a legal or symbolic ceremony, Spain's stunning landscapes provide a breathtaking backdrop for your intimate celebration.

I do have a recommendation on an officiant in Mallorca. He is incredible and I’d love to refer him to any couple who works with us for their Spain elopement. Warning- he’s very distractingly attractive.

Best Places to Elope in Spain

Spain is home to 16 national parks, numerous lakes, and landscapes like the desert, mountains, and forest, making this area extremely diverse. Below are just a few of the many different types of scenery you can experience on your elopement day.

Picos de Europa National Park

Located in Northern Spain, Picos de Europa National Park is a well-known national park composed of forested mountain ranges filled with lakes, wildlife, and numerous hiking trails. This is one of the more popular national parks, so be prepared for visitors. But don’t be afraid of tourists, we know the best time of year, week, and day to elope at heavily trafficked areas, so we can minimize the foot traffic around your elopement memories. If epic hiking and views that are out of this world, Northern Spain may be the best place to elope for you.

Bardenas Reales

Also in Northern Spain, Bardenas Reales is a desert-like region filled with canyons, colors, and epic structures. It’s definitely giving Utah or Western US vibes. This is perfect for couples looking at having a desert elopement but in Europe. While most folks think of coast lines and the salty sea when they think of Spain, getting hitched in the desert instead would make for a wildly unique wedding day.

If eloping in Bardenas Reales is up your alley, there are plenty of incredible experiences to add to your trip. Besides the obvious hiking or mountain biking in the terrain, plan to visit the nearby medieval town of Olite, famous for its grand castle and charming old streets, or make a stop at Tudela, known for its historic architecture and delicious local cuisine. If you’re a wine lover (I’m a #pinotgrigiogirl), the region is close to some of Spain's best wineries in Navarra and La Rioja. Don’t skimp on the lodging- plan to get your shut eye at the luxurious Aire de Bardenas, a boutique hotel offering stunning views of the desert and unforgettable stargazing under the vast open sky.

Lakes of Covadonga

Lakes of Covadonga are two glacial lakes in Northern Spain. There’s a hiking trail that takes you around the lakes and to other beautiful lookout points around the area.

Barcelona

Barcelona is home to some of the most beautiful architecture in all of Spain. Whether you want to elope or simply enjoy the scenery here, Barcelona is for everyone. Plus, there are a variety of activities and amazing restaurants to enjoy on your elopement day.

Tossa De Mar

Tossa De Mar is a quaint coastal town near Barcelona. Known primarily for its old architecture, this slice of Spain has some incredible beaches to explore. This location is pretty busy during the summer months, so consider having a weekday elopement during the off-season, or during sunrise/sunset in the summer.

Mallorca

We just photographed this Mallorca elopement back in September and SHEWWWW buddy let me tell you what. Had it not been for my hours and hours of online research, and hiring a travel consultant in Spain, I’m afraid this beautiful couple would have ended up in a super high trafficked area and that was NOT what they wanted. Luckily, I scoured the web and found the perfect location for a private elopement in Mallorca. The only folks in sight were two nude sunbathers, who promptly put their pants on when they saw us walk in.

A bride and groom stand with their officiant on the cliffs in Mallorca, with the mountains leering behind them.

I cannot begin to explain the magic of Mallorca. I have never experienced a place with the charm of Europe, the vibe of Spaniards, yet the mountains and sea are a stone’s throw apart. Honestly, Mallorca has it all.

If you want warm weather, luxe accommodations, and simply divine food, Mallorca is a dream destination for your elopement- just trust me ok?

Many couples opt for a symbolic ceremony on the island, leaving behind the stress of legal requirements and focusing purely on the joy of their elopement day. When I say unforgettable, I mean it. Having spent 8 days in Mallorca this year, I have all the recs on where to go, what to skip, and where to eat.

Malaga

Eloping in Málaga is a fantastic choice for couples seeking a mix of sun, sea, and history on Spain’s southern coast. This vibrant city in Andalusia offers a unique combination of rich cultural heritage, stunning beaches, and scenic mountain views. Couple pics in the iconic Moorish Alcazaba fortress? Yes please! Plus vows on a golden beach with the Mediterranean as your backdrop? We’re in!

As much as we’ve traveled, I always recommend finding places to explore that are a bit more off the beaten path. In Malaga, check out the charming neighborhood of Pedregalejo, where you can stroll along the seaside promenade lined with colorful chiringuitos (beach bars) serving mouthwatering tapas. Take a leisurely bike ride along the coast or enjoy a sunset picnic on the beach. With its warm weather, delicious Andalusian cuisine, and welcoming atmosphere, Málaga is a perfect destination for a laid-back, sun-drenched elopement.

Here’s a perfect itinerary for a dreamy elopement in Málaga, blending romance, adventure, and local culture:

Day 1: Arrival and Exploration

  • Morning: Arrive in Málaga and check into a cozy boutique hotel.

  • Afternoon: Stroll through the historic center. Visit the Catedral de Málaga, often referred to as "La Manquita" (the one-armed lady). Don’t forget to snap some photos in the lively Plaza de la Constitución.

  • Evening: Enjoy a romantic dinner at a local restaurant like El Pimpi, where you can indulge in traditional Andalusian dishes while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Pro-tip: ALWAYS make reservations.

Day 2: Elopement Day

  • Morning: Start with a leisurely breakfast at a café near the beach, enjoying fresh pastries and coffee.

  • Late Morning: Head to the Alcazaba of Málaga, where you can explore the stunning Moorish fortress and take beautiful photos with panoramic views of the city.

  • Afternoon: Your elopement ceremony! Have your photographer (hi- hopefully that’s me!) help you choose a spot that will feel intimate. Consider hiring a local officiant to create a memorable and personalized ceremony.

  • Post-Ceremony: Celebrate with a bottle of local Málaga wine or champagne on the beach, enjoying the sun and sea breeze together.

  • Evening: For a unique dining experience, try a seaside chiringuito (beach bar) where you can savor fresh seafood or tapas with the waves and waiter being the only guests at your reception (ok maybe the other diners and patrons too)

Day 3: Adventure and Relaxation

  • Morning: Take a scenic hike in the nearby Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. Enjoy breathtaking views and discover hidden gems along the way. Pack a picnic to enjoy at a scenic spot.

  • Afternoon: Return to Málaga and unwind at the Playa de la Malagueta. Take a dip in the Mediterranean or relax on the sand while sipping refreshing drinks.

  • Evening: Experience the local nightlife by catching a flamenco show in La Malagueta or at a local venue in the city. Immerse yourselves in the passionate rhythms and culture of Andalusia.

Day 4: Culture and Departure

  • Morning: Before you leave, visit the Picasso Museum to admire the works of Málaga’s most famous son.

  • Afternoon: Explore the charming streets of Pedregalejo, where you can enjoy a final meal by the sea. Try a traditional espeto de sardinas (grilled sardines) at one of the beachfront restaurants.

  • Departure: Head back to your accommodation to collect your bags and say goodbye to Málaga.

Grenada

Eloping in Granada feels like stepping into a real-life fairytale. This city is pure magic, where every cobblestone street and hidden courtyard offers a gasp and a “Can you imagine living here?!”. Lose yourselves in the winding streets of the Albaicín, sip wine while watching a fiery flamenco performance, or simply gaze out over the Sierra Nevada mountains as the sun sets. Granada’s vibrant energy and timeless beauty make it a dreamy, unforgettable spot for couples looking to celebrate their love in a place that feels truly special.

After you’ve had your fill of Grenada, take an adventure day over to the Sacromonte Caves. Tucked into the hills just outside the city, this lesser-known area is rich with culture and history. Once home to the city’s Romani community, Sacromonte offers a unique glimpse into traditional Andalusian life. Explore the whitewashed cave houses, many of which have been converted into quirky museums, artisan workshops, and intimate flamenco venues. And if you’re up for a little hike, the viewpoint at the top of Sacromonte offers a stunning panorama of the Alhambra and the city, especially at sunset.

Seville

Eloping in Seville is like stepping into a romantic Spanish dream. With its sun-drenched plazas, ornate architecture, and the intoxicating scent of orange blossoms, the city feels tailor-made for love stories. Imagine exchanging your vows in the lush gardens of the Alcázar, a royal palace that looks straight out of a fairy tale, or beneath the soaring arches of the grand Plaza de España. After your ceremony, you can stroll hand-in-hand through the cobbled streets of the old town, sip sangria at a tucked-away tapas bar, or catch a passionate flamenco performance in one of the city’s intimate venues. Seville’s vibrant energy, warm weather, and timeless beauty create the perfect backdrop for couples looking for a destination elopement that’s equal parts romantic and unforgettable. Plus the food in Seville is to die for.

For an off-the-beaten-path experience in Seville, hop over to the Triana neighborhood. Just across the Guadalquivir River, this lively area is often overlooked by tourists but brims with authentic Andalusian culture. Stroll through its colorful streets, lined with ceramic shops and local tapas bars, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. A must-see is the Castillo de San Jorge, a hidden gem that houses a ceramics museum in a restored medieval castle. Let your hair down and take a flamenco class together at a local studio, where you can learn some moves while immersing in the city’s rich cultural heritage. Triana is the perfect place to create unforgettable memories away from the typical tourist trail.

Marbella

Eloping in Marbella? Oh, you're in for a treat! This place is an absolute dream for couples looking to tie the knot in style.

If you want a bit of charm, head to the old town, where the cobblestone streets are lined with bright buildings and vibrant flowers. The Plaza de los Naranjos is just stunning, and it’s the perfect spot for a romantic ceremony surrounded by the sweet smell of orange trees. After you say “I do,” why not celebrate at one of those fabulous beachfront restaurants? Fresh seafood, local wines, and an unforgettable sunset? I’m in, bitch!

And if you’re up for a little adventure, the Sierra Blanca mountains aren’t far away. You can hike for breathtaking views or explore the quaint village of Ojén, where you’ll get a taste of authentic Andalusian life.

Honestly, Marbella has this perfect mix of luxury, natural beauty, and cultural vibes that makes it an ideal spot for an elopement adventure of a lifetime.

Best Time to Get Married In Spain

One of the great things about Spain is the weather.

In fact, the weather in Spain is so mild and mostly dry that anytime of year is a great time to elope.

However, the two best seasons to elope are:

  • spring

  • fall

Both of these months bring good weather, small crowds, and plenty of fun activities to do. In the winter months, the northern part of Spain will get snow while the southern part stays dry.

Pro tip: Avoid visiting Spain in the summer. Prices increase, there are huge crowds, and you need to plan months in advance when it comes to booking reservations for things.

How Much Does it Cost to Elope in Spain

One of the best things about eloping ANYWHERE is the budget!

Your elopement could be as big or as small as you’d like it to be. If you’re looking to have a higher-end elopement filled with flowers, hair and makeup, fancy lodging, etc., and are flying from the United States, expect to pay anywhere from $12,000 to $20,000.

However, if you’re looking for something much simpler and you’re traveling from the United States, a budget-friendly elopement could cost you anywhere from $10,000 - $30,000.

Traveling from Europe? It’ll be a bit cheaper, but not by much.

Things to Know Before Visiting Spain

  1. The public transportation system in Spain is amazing! If you’re eloping somewhere close to a big city, renting a car isn’t necessary.

  2. Dinner is served late. People don’t usually have dinner until 9-10pm, so plan accordingly, as some restaurants don’t open until late at night.

  3. If you stay in large cities like Madrid or Barcelona, be aware of pickpocketers. It has become a real problem over the past few years. Always be sure to keep your belongings close.
