ELopement in the Appalachian Mountains in early spring
There’s something about the Appalachian Mountains that just feels right for an elopement like this. It’s quiet. Honest. No frills. It makes you slow down and pay attention. To the way the light changes, to the people with you, to what you’re actually here for.
Theresa grew up not far from here and used to come to Dolly Sods with her dad, who’s no longer with us. This place holds a lot of memory for her, so when she and Pedro decided to plan an elopement in the Appalachian Mountains, this was the place that made sense.
Pedro is from Brazil and his family flew all the way in to be here. A small group, nothing formal, just people who love them, gathered in a place that mattered. No ceremony arch, no timeline pressure. Just real people, showing up.
Why Appalachia Is Perfect for an Elopement
While everyone else is chasing trendy desert views out West, we’re over here in Appalachia doing things slower, quieter, and with a hell of a lot meaning.
There’s something about the culture here that just fits elopements. Appalachia isn’t flashy. It doesn’t ask for attention. But it holds things, history, tradition, grief, joy, in a way that feels rooted. People here know how to gather around a table. They know how to make space for both silence and story. That kind of energy lends itself to the kind of wedding day that doesn’t need a timeline full of fluff or a design board with color palettes.
You can bring your whole family. Or you can just bring yourselves. You can hike in boots or show up in a dress that belonged to your grandma. You can exchange vows with your feet in the dirt, or on a rocky outcrop with miles of mountains behind you. Either way, the land won’t ask you to be anything other than who you are.
And that’s the thing — an Appalachia mountain elopement doesn’t need to perform. It’s not trying to go viral. It’s about connection, place, and showing up honestly.

If you’re a long-time follower of my photography work (bless you) then you mayyy start to notice a shift in my editing. I’ve been aiming for a more natural, film style edit for the longest time. And finally I just started transitioning my edits to be more true-to-color with a bit of nostalgic grain.
For fun, here’s a bonus gallery that I edited to match my 35mm film. Enjoy!
