Best Places to Elope in the World – Stress-Free & Stunning Destinations
If you’ve dug into wedding planning at all and thought to yourself “this shit is not for me,” you’ve come to the right place my friend.
You don’t want a big wedding. The idea of planning seating charts, dealing with guest lists, and stressing over centerpieces? Not for you.
What you do want is something that feels right—just the two of you (or a handful of your favorite people), standing somewhere breathtaking, saying your vows without the pressure of a crowd watching.
But here’s the thing: some places make eloping way harder than it should be. Paperwork, waiting periods, weird legal hoops—no thanks.
That’s why I put this together. These are the easiest, most beautiful places to elope, where you can focus on what actually matters: marrying your person, in a way that feels effortless and unforgettable.
Let’s find your perfect spot, shall we?
As a seasoned elopement photographer/planner, here’s my list of best places to elope which covers:
After photographing nearly 100 elopements all over the world, I basically feel like an expert in what makes a location easy to elope at. In our experience, here’s what to consider when deciding on where to jet off to:
Travel distance. This one’s pretty straightforward, but let’s be real—some of you might actually enjoy the idea of a 23-hour travel day. If that’s your vibe, go for it! For most couples, though, the thought of juggling flights, boats, and off-the-grid transport—all while managing wedding attire, camera gear, and logistics—can turn an exciting elopement into a logistical headache.
Our take? Keep it under an 8-hour flight for that perfect balance of adventure and ease. Anything longer, and you might spend more time recovering from travel than actually enjoying your elopement.
Welcoming atmosphere to foreigners/tourists. Not every destination gives off that “we’re so happy you’re here!” energy—and trust us, that vibe matters when you’re eloping. Some places make it easy. Locals are warm and welcoming, vendors are used to working with international couples, and the process feels smooth from start to finish. Other places? Not so much.
We encourage you, or your elopement planner, to do some digging on this one before deciding for certain where you’re going to tie the knot. For an stress-free elopement, choose a destination that embraces visitors, makes paperwork painless, and has vendors who actually understand elopements.
Stunning scenery without permits. You’ve found the perfect spot—breathtaking cliffs, a secluded beach, or a misty mountaintop. But then… you realize you need a permit. And not just any permit—one that requires applications, fees, and a waiting period that makes you question everything. Some places make getting married in nature way more complicated than it should be. Others? They let you show up, say your vows, and soak in the moment—no red tape, no restrictions, no stress.
For the easiest elopement, choose a location where the only thing you have to worry about is finding the perfect view—not filling out paperwork to stand there. Not sure where that is? I’ve got you boo boo.
Flexible ceremony options. One of the best things about eloping? You get to do it your way. No rigid rules, no officiant required (in many places), and no pressure to follow traditions that don’t resonate with you. Most couples who elope choose to have a symbolic ceremony—a heartfelt exchange of vows without the legal paperwork happening in that exact moment. This gives you total freedom over where, when, and how you say “I do.”
You can have your ceremony on a cliffside at sunrise, in the middle of a forest, or barefoot on the beach—no courthouse, no waiting periods, no restrictions. Of course, if you want your elopement to be legally binding on the spot, plenty of destinations make that easy too. But if you’d rather sign the paperwork back home and focus on the experience, a symbolic ceremony is the ultimate stress-free way to get married.
Ready to say “I do” in a place that feels magical, adventurous, and stress-free? Here are some of the best countries for your elopement, where stunning landscapes and easy logistics come together for a seamless adventure of a lifetime.
Why it’s great for elopements:
Iceland is famous for its otherworldly landscapes—think waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, and black sand beaches. You can elope in jaw-dropping places like Thingvellir National Park or by the Seljalandsfoss waterfall without worrying about complicated permits. The best part? Iceland has self-solemnizing laws, meaning you don’t need an officiant—just the two of you, exchanging vows with the backdrop of stunning nature.
What to keep in mind:
Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, so come prepared for anything, from sunshine to snow. It's best to choose a location close to your accommodations to avoid long treks with your wedding attire and gear.
Best time to go: June to August for longer days and mild weather, November to February for the Northern Lights.

Spain offers a perfect mix of history, culture, and stunning landscapes. Whether you dream of eloping on a sun-kissed beach in Costa Brava, in a vineyard, or in a charming village in Catalonia, Spain’s beauty makes it a top pick. Easy legal processes and plenty of destination wedding vendors who specialize in elopements make it a breeze to say “I do.”
What to keep in mind:
Though getting married in Spain is simple, you might need some paperwork depending on your nationality. Be sure to plan ahead, and an elopement planner can help navigate any details.
Best time to go: Spring and fall for mild weather.

Why it’s great for elopements:
From the national parks in Utah and Colorado to the lush forests of Oregon, the USA offers an endless variety of landscapes to make your elopement unforgettable. National parks like Yosemite and Zion are elopement hotspots, and many locations don’t require permits for small ceremonies. The legal process is straightforward, and there are plenty of local officiants who specialize in elopements.
What to keep in mind:
While the process is generally easy, certain national parks may require permits for outdoor weddings, so always double-check. And if you're traveling across the country, factor in the distance and your preferred climate.
Best time to go: May to October for ideal weather in most locations, spring for blooming flowers, and fall for autumn colors.
Looking for something unique? We may be biased, but elopements in West Virginia are gorgeous, affordable, and off-the-beaten path. We’re also HUGE fans of eloping in Joshua Tree (see photo evidence below)
Why it’s great for elopements:
Switzerland is a dreamy elopement destination with its snow-capped mountains, serene lakes, and charming villages. Locations like Lake Geneva or the Swiss Alps offer some of the most stunning backdrops in the world. It’s also self-solemnizing in some regions, making it super easy for couples to elope without the need for officiants.
What to keep in mind:
Switzerland’s scenery can be remote, so be prepared for travel within the country. However, it’s worth it for those seeking an intimate, breathtaking location. The legal requirements are simple for international couples, but be sure to confirm specific details with local authorities.
Best time to go: June to September for warm weather and clear skies, December to February for winter wonderland vibes.

Best time to go: March to June and September to November for mild weather and fewer tourists.

1. Iceland
Legal Requirements & Permits:
Iceland is one of the easiest countries for an elopement in terms of legalities. No residency requirement is needed, and you only need to submit paperwork 3-4 weeks prior to your wedding. A couple of important documents you'll need include your birth certificates and passport, along with proof of no previous marriages (if applicable). There’s no permit required for outdoor ceremonies, so you can simply show up and exchange vows in Iceland's stunning natural surroundings.
2. Spain
Legal Requirements & Permits:
Spain is quite accommodating for elopements. For civil ceremonies, you need to provide documentation like passports, birth certificates, and proof of residence for at least two weeks prior to the wedding. If you’re opting for a symbolic ceremony, the process is even simpler, as there are no legal documents involved. You don’t need a permit for most outdoor locations, but some places (like parks or historic sites) may require one—be sure to confirm with your venue or planner in advance.
3. USA
Legal Requirements & Permits:
Legal requirements vary by state, but in general, you will need to apply for a marriage license (which you can usually get the same day in many states). There’s no residency requirement in most states, and you don’t need to be a U.S. citizen to marry. For symbolic ceremonies, there's no paperwork needed, but if you plan on having a legal ceremony, an officiant is required to file the marriage license after the ceremony. No permits are typically needed for outdoor ceremonies, but national parks and protected areas may require one, so double-check with your venue or planner.
4. Switzerland
Legal Requirements & Permits:
Switzerland allows for self-solemnizing weddings in some regions, which means you can legally marry without an officiant, as long as you are both citizens of certain countries (including the U.S. and EU nations). Otherwise, you'll need an officiant and to provide birth certificates, passports, and proof of residency in Switzerland for at least 10 daysprior to the ceremony. Outdoor ceremonies in public spaces generally don’t require a permit, but venues like parks and gardens may have specific requirements, so confirm ahead of time.
5. Italy
Legal Requirements & Permits:
In Italy, couples can choose between civil or religious ceremonies. For a civil ceremony, you will need to provide passports, birth certificates (translated into Italian), and proof of residence for at least two days before the ceremony. Symbolic ceremonies are easier and don’t require legal paperwork, but they’re just that—symbolic. You’ll need a permit for ceremonies in some outdoor locations, such as public parks, so make sure to get approval ahead of time through your venue or wedding planner.
6. Portugal
Legal Requirements & Permits:
Portugal is relatively straightforward when it comes to elopements. You’ll need to provide passports, birth certificates, and proof of no previous marriages (if applicable). There’s a 10-day residency requirement for civil ceremonies, but if you’re opting for a symbolic ceremony, you won’t need any legal documents. Outdoor weddings usually don’t require a permit, but certain historic sites and protected areas may, so check with your wedding venue to avoid surprises.
7. Ireland
Legal Requirements & Permits:
Ireland has an easy process for couples planning to elope. Civil ceremonies are legally binding, and you’ll need to provide passports, birth certificates, and proof of residency in Ireland for three days before the wedding. For a symbolic ceremony, there’s no paperwork required. Outdoor ceremonies in public places like beaches or parks don’t usually require permits, but some iconic locations (such as the Cliffs of Moher) may need approval from local authorities, so it's important to confirm in advance.
A Stress-Free Approach: Legal Paperwork at Home
For many couples, the simplest and most stress-free approach is to sign the legal paperwork in their home countrybefore they head to their elopement destination. This allows you to skip the legal requirements and potential paperwork headaches abroad, leaving you with more time to enjoy the experience. You can then have a symbolic ceremony with an officiant or celebrant in your elopement location, making the moment feel just as meaningful without the legalities. This way, you can focus entirely on the celebration, knowing the paperwork is already taken care of at home. It’s a practical and romantic solution that allows you to experience your dream elopement with fewer logistical worries.
The ideal time to elope varies by season, and each season offers its own charm and benefits depending on the experience you’re after. Here’s a breakdown of each season and our recommended locations:
Winter (December to February)
Winter elopements are perfect for couples seeking serenity and snow-covered landscapes. You'll enjoy fewer crowds, lower rates, and magical winter backdrops.
Recommended locations:
Iceland for its Northern Lights and snowy landscapes.
Switzerland for Alpine snow scenes and cozy mountain escapes.
Canada for a winter wonderland elopement in national parks.
Spring (March to May)
Spring brings mild temperatures and the beauty of blooming flowers and fresh greenery. It’s also a great time to avoid the busy summer wedding season.
Recommended locations:
Portugal for mild weather and vibrant spring flowers.
Italy for beautiful vineyard views and romantic countryside vibes.
Spain for beaches and beautiful coastlines.
Joshua Tree for the mild(er) desert temps
Summer (June to August)
Summer offers the longest days and the warmest weather, perfect for couples who want to elope in a place that’s more about adventure than weather-related constraints. However, be mindful of the busy wedding season, as some locations can get crowded.
Recommended locations:
USA for scenic national parks and endless outdoor options like the PNW.
Iceland for the magical midnight sun and vibrant landscapes.

Norway Norway’s summer is refreshing, with temperatures that stay moderate and daylight lasting well into the evening, making it perfect for late-night elopements..
Fall (September to November)
Fall is widely regarded as the best time to elope. With milder weather, fewer crowds, and stunning natural colors, it’s ideal for couples seeking a more intimate experience.
Recommended locations:
Italy for Tuscany’s vineyards and mild autumn weather.
Ireland for the lush landscapes and cooler, quieter season.

West Virginia for some of the best fall foliage in the US.
When it comes to planning an elopement, the goal is to make it feel authentically you—no fluff, no stress, just what works for you as a couple. I’ve worked with nearly 100 couples all over the world, and here’s what I’ve learned along the way:
Focus on what matters to you
Forget tradition and do what feels right. This day is about you two, so focus on the details that matter most to you. Whether that’s a mountain view, an intimate ceremony, or just a quiet moment together—prioritize those things. If you’re not into certain traditions, skip them. This is your day.Hire a planner (if you need one)
If your elopement destination is a bit outside your comfort zone, an elopement planner can make everything easier. They’ll handle the logistical stuff—permits, paperwork, local vendors—so you can just show up and enjoy the experience. Plus, they know the hidden gems of your location, which could be a game-changer. Nowawdays- most elopement photographers offer planning in their packages, like me. All of my destination packages include both digital planning and in-person scouting.Keep your guest list tiny
A lot of couples choose to elope just the two of them, and if that’s your vibe, great. But if you want to bring a couple of close friends or family, keep it small. The fewer people, the more intimate and relaxed your day will feel. No need for a crowd unless that’s your thing.Don’t overcomplicate your timeline
You have the flexibility to take things at your own pace, but having a basic timeline will help keep things smooth. Know when and where you want to say your vows, how much time you need for photos, and when you just want to chill. You don’t need to rush through anything. Just flow with it.Pack smart, not heavy
If you’re trekking to your ceremony spot, you don’t want to be weighed down by unnecessary stuff. Pack light—think practical and stylish, not heavy and cumbersome. You’ll thank yourself later. And if you’re doing something adventurous, make sure your shoes are made for the terrain.Expect the unexpected (weather-wise)
Weather can be a little unpredictable, especially with outdoor elopements. Have a backup plan (or at least some weather-appropriate gear). A cute umbrella or a cozy jacket goes a long way. But don’t stress—rain, wind, or snow can just add to the magic if you roll with it.Sort your legal stuff early
Legalities vary by location, but for the most part, it’s easier to take care of your paperwork at home before the ceremony. This lets you focus on the meaningful part—the vows and the moment. Do your homework on what’s required, but don’t let the paperwork stress you out. There’s a solution for every situation.Don’t forget to live the day
Sure, you’ll want amazing photos (who doesn’t?), but don’t let the pursuit of the perfect shot get in the way of your experience. Let the photographer capture those real, unposed moments, but take time to just be present with each other. The memories you’ll cherish are the ones that feel natural and raw.
Elopements are about having your day, without the pressure of expectations. Trust yourself, trust the process, and enjoy the ride. It’s your adventure—embrace it.
One of the best things about eloping ANYWHERE is the budget!
Your elopement could be as big or as small as you’d like it to be. High-end or luxury- the choice is yours (and your wallet’s lol)

Starting your elopement journey doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, it can be simple and stress-free if you break it down step by step. Here’s how to get rolling without the overwhelm:
Set your budget first – Knowing what you're comfortable spending keeps you focused and makes the rest of the planning easier. I’d recommend to not set your budget based on what you read on the internet. Do some initial research on how much flights costs, an estimation of lodging, your wedding clothes, etc. Setting a ballpark budget is usually the best approach, in our opinion.
Pick your location – Go with a place that feels you. Whether it’s a mountaintop, beach, or something else—just make sure it speaks to you both.
Find a photographer who also plans – Seriously. A photographer who knows the elopement ropes can handle the logistics too, from permits to vendor recs, so you don’t have to juggle a bunch of different people.
Book your flights and lodging – Once you’ve locked in the location, it’s time to book your travel. Keep it simple and find a place that’s comfortable and close to your ceremony spot.
Secure additional vendors – Your photographer/planner can help you navigate this portion. Some folks hire hair and makeup artists, a baker for a celebration dessert, florist for a bouquet, or make dinner reservations.
Let your vendor team handle the rest – Trust me, I’ve done this hundreds of times. I’ll guide you through everything and take care of the details, so you can focus on the experience, not the stress.
The best part? Keeping it simple. I’ve got your back from start to finish, so you can enjoy the process and, most importantly, each other.
